Give your child a smile they feel proud of, without the stress and tears of a typical dentist visit.

At KidSmiles Texas, we know you want to be the kind of parent who gives your child every advantage, including a healthy, confident smile. The problem is that many kids feel anxious at the dentist, which can turn even a simple check-up into a battle and leave you feeling guilty or frustrated. We believe dental visits should be something your child actually enjoys, not fears.

A calm, kid-first experience every time.

  • Friendly pediatric specialists who speak your child’s language and explain everything in simple, reassuring terms.
  • A fun, welcoming environment with kid-centered touches that help nervous children relax and feel safe from the moment they walk in.
  • Gentle, preventive-focused care that protects growing teeth and heads off bigger problems later on.

Pediatric Dentistry: Helpful Information

At KidSmiles we want to keep your child's smile healthy for life! Although they might not have their primary teeth for long, it is important to practice good oral habits at a young age to prevent issues down the line.

A pediatric dentist is a kids’ dentist with two to three extra years of specialized training after dental school, focused only on children’s smiles. From baby’s first tooth through the teen years, our team understands how to guide behavior, ease anxiety, and support each stage of dental growth and development. That means your child gets care tailored to them—and you gain a trusted partner to help prevent future dental problems.

Your child’s “baby teeth” do a lot more than make their smile adorable—they help with chewing, speaking clearly, and holding space for the permanent teeth coming in later. When primary teeth stay healthy, your child can eat comfortably, develop confident speech, and their adult teeth are more likely to come in straight. Taking great care of baby teeth today helps protect your child from bigger dental issues tomorrow.

Children’s teeth begin forming before birth, and the first baby teeth usually appear between 4–12 months of age. Most kids have all 20 primary teeth by around age 3, and permanent teeth typically start coming in around age 6 and continue through the early teen years. If you ever have questions about whether your child’s tooth development is on track, our pediatric dentists are here to walk you through what’s normal and what needs attention.

Digital dental X‑rays are a safe, important part of your child’s dental checkup because they let us see things we can’t spot with the naked eye, like cavities between teeth or issues below the gums. By identifying problems early, we can provide gentler, more affordable treatment and keep your child more comfortable over time. Most children only need routine X‑rays about once a year, but we’ll always explain why they’re recommended and answer your questions first.

Nighttime teeth grinding (bruxism) is common in children, and in many cases, they outgrow it without any treatment. If grinding starts to wear down teeth, cause jaw soreness, or disrupt sleep, we may recommend simple solutions like a custom night guard to protect their smile. At each visit, we check for signs of wear and talk through practical ways to help your child sleep more comfortably.

Thumb or finger sucking can be a normal source of comfort for young children, but if it continues after the front permanent teeth are ready to come in, it may affect tooth alignment and jaw growth. Our pediatric dentists use gentle, positive strategies to help kids gradually break the habit—never shaming them—so you can protect their bite while still supporting their need for comfort. Together, we’ll create a simple plan that fits your child’s personality and your family’s routine.

Inside each tooth is soft tissue called the pulp, which contains nerves and blood vessels that keep the tooth alive and healthy. When decay or injury reaches this area, pulp therapy (sometimes called a “nerve treatment” for kids) lets us clean and treat the inside of the tooth so it can stay in place instead of being removed. Preserving that tooth helps your child chew comfortably, maintain space for adult teeth, and avoid more complex treatment later on.

Pediatric Dental Emergencies

If your child has a toothache, dental injury, or any sudden change in their mouth, call our office right away so we can guide you on next steps and see your child as soon as possible. Our team treats pediatric dental emergencies in Lake Conroe and Huntsville and will help you decide whether your child needs same‑day care.

Toothache

Clean the area of the affected tooth. Rinse the mouth thoroughly with warm water or use dental floss to dislodge any food that may be impacted. If the pain still exists, contact your child’s dentist. Do not place aspirin or heat on the gum or on the aching tooth. If the face is swollen, apply cold compresses and contact your dentist immediately.

Cut or Bitten Tongue, Lip or Cheek

Apply ice to the injured areas to control swelling. If there is bleeding, apply firm but gentle pressure with a gauze or cloth. If bleeding cannot be controlled by simple pressure, call a doctor or visit the hospital emergency room.

Knocked Out Permanent Tooth

If possible, find the tooth. Handle it by the crown, not by the root. You may rinse the tooth with water only. DO NOT clean with soap, scrub, or handle the tooth unnecessarily. Inspect the tooth for fractures. If it is sound, try to reinsert it in the socket. Have the patient hold the tooth in place by biting on a gauze or clean cloth. If you cannot reinsert the tooth, transport the tooth in a cup containing the patient’s saliva or milk, NOT water. If the patient is old enough, the tooth may also be carried in the patient’s mouth (beside the cheek). The patient must see a dentist IMMEDIATELY! Time is a critical factor in saving the tooth.

Knocked Out Baby Tooth

Contact your pediatric dentist.  Unlike with a permanent tooth, the baby tooth should not be replanted due to possible damage to the developing permanent tooth.  In most cases, no treatment is necessary.

Chipped/Fractured Permanent Tooth

Time is critical; contact your pediatric dentist immediately to reduce the chance of infection or the need for extensive dental treatment in the future. Rinse the mouth with water and apply a cold compress to reduce swelling.  If you can find the broken tooth piece, bring it with you to the dentist.

Chipped/Fractured Baby Tooth: Contact your pediatric dentist.

Severe Blow to the Head: Call 911 immediately or take your child to the nearest hospital emergency room.

Possible Broken or Fractured Jaw: Keep the jaw from moving and take your child to the nearest hospital emergency room.
